Amici’s, on De Anza at Town Center Lane—is now featuring Gluten Free dishes, including Pizza. This is a boon for diners who love delicious Italian food, but have had to skip it because they are on a Gluten Free diet. The food is always delicious at Amici’s, and there is ample free parking in the building next door.

Brunch is now served at B.J.’s Brewhouse on De Anza at the 85 Frwy. The restaurant opens at 10:00 on Sat. & Sun., and is offering a new breakfast menu of eggs, pancakes, French toast and a few other options. This is great, of course—when it goes along with the latest morning sports on the plethora of TV’s around the room.

Hobbee’s, at Stevens Creek, in The Oaks Shopping Center offers new and innovative breakfast options almost every day. And, this is the only restaurant we know of where turkey bacon is served for those who prefer turkey. The menu is always interesting and updated, however—if you haven’t tried their ABLT-

Avocado, turkey bacon, lettuce & tomato – you are missing a wonderful sandwich.

Opening remarks and refreshments will be served in Cupertino Community Hall, 10800 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, followed at 11am by a ribbon cutting and further celebration activities in the Teen Room, 2nd floor of the Library, next door.

Congratulatory remarks will be made by: Kris Wang, mayor of Cupertino; Orrin Mahoney, Cupertino councilman and Joint Powers Authority representative; Melinda Cervantes, Santa Clara County Library librarian; Mark Fink, new Cupertino Community librarian; Eno Schmidt, president of the Cupertino Library Foundation board; Kathy Stakey, Friends of the Cupertino Library; and Liz Gallegos and Bev Lenihan, past and present president of the Rotary Club of Cupertino respectively.

Renovation highlights include increasing the seating by 87%, making it more flexible and colorful; increasing the shelving by 21%; and adding more electrical outlets for computers. The carpeting, shelving and furniture are all new, giving an updated look and feel that teens themselves had a hand in selecting. The teen collection is enhanced as well.

“Because of the new design and furniture, the word spread and we have more teens – and new faces – than ever before, said Dolly Goyal, teen librarian. “The renovated space is a welcoming place for teens and their friends to read, relax and work on projects. I am also excited about the new teen-specific resources featured in the room, which include craft and cook books, comic books, video games, audio books and science fiction.”

Funding for this $180,000-plus project was primarily a community based effort. Cupertino Rotary pledged a lead gift of $25,000, naming the Teen Room project as their primary beneficiary of their 2009 Golf Tournament fundraiser. Friends of the Cupertino Library were most generous with an $80,000 donation, and the Cupertino Library Foundation contributed at a level of $62,182. Other donors of note are the City of Cupertino, the Santa Clara County Library and HSBC Bank.

“The renovated Teen Room is truly a testimony to the result that can happen with community collaboration,” said Eno Schmidt, president of the Cupertino Library Foundation.

A sampling of on-going teen programs at the Cupertino Library are free comic book day; cooking/food programs; crafts; Wii games; study nights; SAT/ACT test prep; contests; database class; and the volunteer program.

Before returning home, Roger and David visited with the family of the accident victims and discovered the great need among the people of the Navajo Nation for the things we take for granted. Clothing, shoes, blankets, cooking and eating utensils, small electric appliances, books, toys, games, sporting equipment and other household goods.

After relating the story to the members of the Cupertino Host Lions Club, the club decided to undertake a project to collect, pack, label, and deliver these items to a local church in Gallup, New Mexico. Items are collected throughout the year, stored and packed with the help of the Cupertino High School Leo Club and the Cupertino Quota Club and loaded on a large covered trailer and hauled to Gallup, where the members of the Gallup Lions Club help unload the items. Local volunteers help distribute the items as needed.

The Cupertino Host Lions have been working on this project for over 10 years and collect enough items from donations to make a delivery in a 53 foot semi trailer almost every winter. The above picture shows members of the club sorting and packing the items for storage in one of our two of our sea vans until enough items are collected for delivery. The lower picture shows a portion of the items after the boxes were unloaded in Gallup.

To make donations, contact Roger Reimers at 408-997-2639 or rbreimers@sbcglobal.net, or Bob Ferber at 408-268-6739 or robertferber@earthlink.net.

The temperature is expected to soar to over 100 degrees today, so stay as cool as you can, and drink lots of water. If you have to go outside, use sunscreen and stay out of the sun.

Quinlan Community Center, 10185 -N. Steeling (408/777-3120) is Cupertino’s designated COOLING STATION, for people to get relief from our hot weather. If you do not have air conditioning, and need a cool place to hang out, read and relax – please do not hesitate to go to Quinlan.

Bring children and dogs as well. Please keep your pets inside on hot days like today. They have no way to tell you they are overheated, and can die from the blistering weather. AND, please do not leave children or pets inside cars, which get to high double digits of temperature on warm and hot days.

Remember, if you need to cool off on hot days–even for a little while, come to Quinlan, Cupertino’s official cooling off station. You will feel welcome. Bring a book or two to read, magazines, games for the kids, and take time to enjoy the cool air inside our Community Center.

When Barbara Nunes, Quota Pres. and Fremont Union High School District Vice-Pres. greets Quota of Cupertino members at their first of the year program meeting on Aug. 26th, she will be introducing longtime Cupertino Quota member, Donna Austin, who also serves as Quota International’s District Governor.

It’s quite an honor for the local Quota group whose mission is the support of underprivileged women and children, as well as the hearing impaired, and other local charitable entities. To have someone in the group serving in this prestigious position is an honor.

While we hear much more about other Cupertino Service Clubs, the women (and one man) who make up the membership of this Club quietly do an amazing amount of good deeds, with little fanfare.

Quota’s Annual Hat’s Off To Volunteers luncheon in April raised enough money to make a substantial donation to the Hearing Dog program, a project close to their collective hearts; and they team up with other Service Clubs to do a hands-on Holiday Shopping day for children who need the help.

The C Magazine and Cupertino-News.com tip our Hats to Barbara Nunes and Quota of Cupertino at the start of their new year of doing, giving and helping those who need it.

Kudos to Lehigh Cement, the new guys that took over from “big bad Kaiser.” While not within Cupertino’s jurisdiction, they seem to be doing their corporate best to make corrections that Kaiser left undone.

The news of Lehigh’s latest move to install a single stack before their 2013 deadline, should bring smiles to the folks who have been waxing loud about the lack thereof at the facility. While I suspect that like me, many do not have a clue what a single stack does, their lack of knowledge doesn’t seem to stop them from complaining loudly anyway.

It would be a good move for people to give the fairly new owners of the cement plant a chance to make good on their promises to do the right thing before using them for target practice. Many complaints I’ve heard lately seem to come from folks who seemingly do not realize that Lehigh is not the only quarry in the area, and at times may be leveling accusations at the wrong one.

Just because someone says “it” over and over again, ad nauseam, doesn’t make “it” true. Could all the Federal, State and County agencies be ignoring every single accusation against Kaiser/Lehigh at the same time? Check the facts before repeating accusations being passed off as the real deal. He who yells the loudest usually doesn’t make the most sense. The nastiness that has taken hold in Cupertino is getting way out of hand. It’s mean and it is very tiring.

By Ruby Elbogen

It’s especially annoying to realize what short memories a few people who need busy work have about some city “study events.” The North Vallco Master Plan is a prime example.

To the people who live in our Vallco neighborhood, it was a travesty since—even though Former Councilmember, Patrick Kwok insisted that every single neighborhood be included in the planning because of what happened with Measures D & E, our neighborhood, one of the closest to the North Vallco area was specifically left out.

I say that, since when we brought the error of omission to the attention of the Chair. and city hall, all we got were shrugs and NO appointment of a representative. Being snubbed, but not easily dissuaded, we, of course, attended anyway.

The moderator was good, however no matter how many times people in the group told him to leave housing OUT of the mix, it would mysteriously re-reappear on the board in one form or another.

Unlike the Main Street Cupertino Focus Groups, where the ideas of WE THE PEOPLE were taken seriously, the NVMP meetings were an attempt, in our estimation, to dictate to Apple, HP and the surrounding neighborhoods what the area should be and what it should include. Being seated near the Apple and HP Rep.’s, I can say that I felt their frustration at being dictated to by amateurs. Holding yet another $50,000. Plus No. Vallco Master Plan re-do is a NO-NO, especially in the midst of a recession.

In the middle of a noisy, happy group of people having fun, I had to remind myself that I was among this energized group of people to raise awareness of my business, The C, Cupertino’s gorgeous Lifestyle magazine.

While having fun—it was important for me not to forget why I was there: to promote The C, try to sell a few ads so we can stay in print—and to introduce the magazine to new Chamber members. The same reason every business sends a representative–to promote their store, company, restaurant, theater or publication.

A Chamber of Commerce gives members the chance to market their business in a relaxed atmosphere, the best way to “do” business. Chambers provide a relaxed atmosphere in which to meet and introduce your product to a wide variety of people representing large, small and medium sized companies in one place at one time. And it does this at least once a month.

While there, a business can donate a product or service for a raffle, allowing the extra perk of the business name being announced to all. On the rare occasion when I hear someone say a Chamber did nothing for them, I know they missed a stellar opportunity, by not recognizing that Chamber membership is a great marketing tool THEY themselves, need to use by getting acquainted with other businesspeople. Especially in these tough times, businesses should market themselves in the most expeditious way, and Mixers offer the opportunity to do just this.

Thank you so much, Dear Readers of

Cupertino-News.com, which is nothing at all like our print version: The C Cupertino News, Inc.-our full and official name. The print magazine is known by its nickname: The C.

The C Magazine is the only publication NOT part of our City Government, brought to you-from inside Cupertino–for and by Cupertino people.

Our publications, print and online are a Cupertino small business; The C staff is active in the Chamber of Commerce, and our writers are members of many Cupertino organizations. Because we are here, we are our own sources of information.

Our print magazine is a Lifestyle publication covering travel, human-interest stories, movies, organic food, gardening, wine pairing, people who do extra-ordinary things in–and for Cupertino; beautiful photos, and articles of great interest. The C is available in many, many places throughout Cupertino, as well as sites on the Cupertino/Saratoga border.

We deliver 5,000 copies to places throughout Cupertino, where people gather. Instead of dropping them in driveways, where many would be run over until trash day—residents take the time to pick up a copy of our gorgeous magazine to take home and read about Cupertino friends and neighbors who are not covered in in any other publication. The C was created to cover people who live, work and play here; and is about subjects of interest to Cupertino. We appreciate your support.
